Educational Travelogue: Tuscany, Italy

Friday, August 13th at 1:30pm

Tuscany, known for beautiful landscapes, a rich artistic legacy and its vast influence on high culture, will be Cornell Estates’ educational travelogue destination on Friday, August 13th at 1:30pm. Hillsboro residents Pat and Norm Sandberg will share their travels to this beautiful region of Italy. It is widely regarded as the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and  home to some of the most influential people in the history of arts and science, such as Dante, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci,  and Galileo.

Their program highlights include Montalcino, a walled hilltop town in Tuscany where the climate and nature of the soil favors the numerous acres of vineyards from which some of Tuscany’s most esteemed red wines are produced. It is also home for the Palazzo Comunale, a brick and stone building with a very fine 13th century tower.

The Sandbergs traveled to one of the Tuscany’s most populous city, Florence.  The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This grand city is regarded by many as the art capital of Italy and is the home of several museums including the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi, its most popular museum.

Another historic center that will be covered is Siena, famous for its cuisine, art, museums, and medieval cityscapes.  It is home of the Piazza del Campo, now regarded as one of the most beautiful civic spaces in Europe.  The Piazza del Campo is the site of the local market and the location for various sporting events including a horse race, the Palio.

Since their retirement, Hillsboro residents Norm and Pat Sandberg have traveled both in Europe and the United States.  They have also been active in the Elderhostel programs.  Photography has been a lifelong hobby of Norm’s and Pat is a Quilter sewing for charity and active in local groups and a Guild.

This event is free and open to the public.  Cornell Estates is located at 1005 NE 17th Avenue in Hillsboro.  If you have questions or comments, or would like to plan an activity at Cornell Estates, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Here’s what folks are saying about Cornell Estates’

At dinner last night with friends, my husband and I were enjoying telling “Lois” stories. The lady across from our table excused herself for easvesdropping, but wanted to ask where my mother was, as they were considering assisted living for their mother and they were so happy to (over) hear our stories of her entry into her new life. Of course, we HIGHLY recommended Cornell Estates – with pleasure. You folks are amazing!

SOS for Super-carrier ex-USS Ranger

SOS for Super-carrier ex-USS Ranger

Friday, November 6th 1:30pm at Cornell Estates

On Friday, November 6th, Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living will host Naval Aviator, Tim Myers who will discuss how Washington County residents can assist in bringing the 56,300 ton super carrier USS Ranger to Portland. Myers is a strong supporter of the USS Ranger Museum, a privately funded project, with individual and corporate support.

When Ranger arrives, her new roll, will be to host one of the largest event/conference areas in the area and will attract tourists traveling to visit the largest floating museum in the world, and corporate groups looking to host their next conference in a unique location.

Local veteran organizations will have a permanent home and can make use of the ship for their meetings and events. A destination like this is a must for reunion associations of all sizes and interests. Local youth groups can have an “on-board” experience by staying overnight in the ship’s quarters; schools can utilize the ship’s educational components with classes held aboard.

The USS Ranger joined the Atlantic Fleet October 1957 just prior to sailing for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for shakedown. She commenced another period of sustained combat operations against North Vietnam and earned 13 battle stars for service in Vietnam. On July 12 1976, Ranger was assigned to operate off the coast of Kenya in response to a threat of military action by Ugandan forces. On December 19, 1992 Ranger was relieved and began her last long journey and was decommissioned on July 10, 1993.

The program is free and open to the public. Cornell Estates is located at 1005 N.E. 17th Avenue, Hillsboro. Call 503-640-2884 for more information.

“In a nutshell, you are amazing.”

October 23, 2009

Over the yesrs, we’ve had contact with numerous other retirment/assisted living facilities, some even newer than Cornell Estaes.  But never, ever, have we found a finer staff than you folks.

Here are all the things you do right, some of them unique to Cornell Estates:

1.  Time after time, you smile.  Also, you all seem to know the names of many of the residents, addressing them personally and chatting with them as if you are friends.

2.  All of you who know us greet us, as family members, every time we visit.

3.  You check in on our mom regularly to assist her.  Yes, we know it is protocol to do this every two hours, but it has made a difference in her well-being.  When she has needed your help, you have been responsive, professional, and caring.

4.  Twice in the past two months you deemed it necessary to send our mom via an ambulance to the emergency room.  You called to notify us of her needs and you moved quickly to respond to her.  Always, you were calm and eased our concerns.  Then you continued to update us.

5.  About a month ago, we arrived to update our mom on business.  We came from out of town, with no time to eat, and were very hungry.  Your kitchen staff went out of their way to bring us the most yummy turkey sandwiches.  Then guess what, when we offered to pay, you declined our offer.

6.  You never put pressure on us, as the family, to come at your convenience.  When we cannot attend a meeting due to a prior engagement, you understand.  Generally, we reschedule, or you handle the meeting on your own and move on.

7.  Every time we’ve heard you address a resident, or a family member, we hear kindness and respect in your voice.

8.  You take the initiative to communicate with us on other issues, such as when our mom needs personal items like shampoo, soap, etc.  You give us updates on issues such as medicines, laundry/clothing, etc.  Again, sometimes we can come immediately, and somtimes we can’t, as we have our own busy lives, too.

9.  On numerous occasions, you have reassured us that things are fine, that our mother is doing well, and that you are glad to have her as a resident.

So, thanks to each one of you.  You give our mother great care and consideration.  We know of no other retirement, assisted living, or adult foster home that gives better customer services.  You are the best!

- Teri
