A Town Hall with Abraham Lincoln
Wednesday, February 22nd at 1:30 pm
Have you ever wanted to ask Abraham Lincoln a question? Or better yet, have a conversation with one of our most famous presidents? Well, here is your chance! Join Lincoln portrayer, Steve Holgate, on Wednesday, February 22nd, at 1:30 pm for a town hall re-enactment at Cornell Estates Retirement & Assisted Living.
“A Town Hall with Abraham Lincoln,” is a one-of-a-kind chance to ask Abraham Lincoln questions about his time at the White House and the momentous decisions he made during the Civil War. Starting from his remarkable resemblance to Lincoln, Holgate will deliver a 25-minute opening at the town hall, centering on Lincoln’s presidency.
He will feature selections from Lincoln’s most famous speeches, including the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address, and will then open the floor to questions from his audience, who will take on the role of Civil War-era journalists
Abraham Lincoln was the United States’ 16th president, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April of 1865. He successfully led his country through the American Civil War, thus preserving the Union while ending slavery, and promoting economic and financial modernization.
Reared in a poor family on the western frontier, Lincoln was mostly self-educated. He became a country lawyer, an Illinois state legislator, and a one-term member of the United States House of Representatives, but failed in two attempts to be elected to the United States Senate.
Holgate, an actor of forty years experience, has been a Lincoln presenter for twelve years, offering rare insights into the life of Abraham Lincoln, including his personal tragedies, as well as some of his favorite jokes, and even his poetry.

Educational Travelogue: Ireland
Friday, March 2nd at 1:30 pm
To most of us, Ireland means Riverdance, Celtic knots, and pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. And yet, there’s much more to love about Ireland! Join local Irish dance instructor Sam Keator on Friday, March 2nd at 1:30 pm at Cornell Estates Retirement & Assisted Living as he takes us on a tour of Ireland, its people, and its music.
One of the best ways to explore Ireland is through pictures and stories, and Keator has plenty of both to share with us. Through his presentation, we will experience Ireland through his eyes, from the busy cultural center of Dublin and into the Irish countryside. Along the way, Keator will share his own story of how he first discovered Irish dance over ten years ago, and how it changed the course of his life.
Keator will end the tour of Ireland by playing a couple of songs on his concertina, which resembles an accordion. Developed in England and Germany in the 1830s, concertinas were extremely popular throughout Europe during the 19th century, and Ireland was no exception. What better way to end a journey through Ireland than with some of its haunting music?
A resident of Tualatin, Keator attended his first Irish dance class in 1997. He was immediately hooked, and in January 2005, he passed a rigorous test to become a licensed Irish dance instructor himself! The owner of S and A Irish Entertainment, Sam teaches weekly classes in the Portland area as well as calling at local ceilis. He also hosts small Irish music concerts in his own music room and is an active member of the All-Ireland Cultural Society of Oregon.

Healthier You Lecture Series:
“Leaky Pipes in Women of a Certain Age”
Friday, March 9th at 1:30 pm
There’s no denying that our bodies change as we age. For women over age 40, however, one of the most undesirable changes can be the development of an overactive bladder. That’s why we invited Dr. Laurie Larsen, a certified Urologist, to present “Leaky Pipes in Women of a Certain Age” on Friday, March 9th at 1:30 pm at Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living.
Dr. Larsen will cover commonly asked questions regarding an overactive bladder, including a definition of the condition, why it occurs in older women, and how to treat it. Many physicians place overactive bladder conditions on a parallel level as osteoporosis, breast cancer, arthritis, and even the flu. With nearly a third of women over the age of 65 afflicted with this condition, it certainly pays to be as informed as possible!
The daughter of Cornell Estates residents Lloyd and Dee Larsen, Dr. Laurie Larsen is a board certified Urologist who specializes in addressing female Urological issues. A graduate of Oregon Health and Science University, she has over 24 years of experience in the Urological field. She currently practices in Las Vegas, Nevada, and makes frequent trips to Portland to visit her family.
This program is free and open to the public. Cornell Estates is located at 1005 NE 17th Avenue, Hillsboro. For more information, please call Cornell Estates Retirement & Assisted Living at (503) 640-2884.
Educational Travelogue:
Island Hopping in the San Juans
Friday, March 16th at 1:30 pm
Deep green forests. Sparkling clear waters. Silence broken only by birdsong. Sound like the perfect vacation? If so, we invite you to join us as we head to the San Juan Islands on Friday, March 16th, at 1:30 pm at Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living. Our presenters and guides for the trip will be Norm and Pat Sandberg, who will bring our winter escape alive through breathtaking pictures and first-hand accounts of their island-hopping adventures.
Walk alongside Norm and Pat as we explore Orcas Island, which is famous for its creative climate. Orcas Island is home to potters, jewelers, painters, and more, many of whom maintain galleries on the island. Our adventure presents an opportunity to view a phenomenal private collection of San Juan Islands art, located in the owner-curator’s private residence.
Or, hop aboard the Washington State Ferry as we head out to a biodynamic farm on Lopez Island to discuss sustainable farming in the islands with a renowned expert. Finally, we will end our tour of the islands on San Juan Island itself with a visit to a lavender farm, an outdoor sculpture park, the historic Roche Harbor Village, a picturesque lighthouse and more.
Norm and Pat Sandberg are retired and live in Orenco between Beaverton and Hillsboro. Traveling has become a favorite pastime in their “golden years,” especially through the Road Scholar program (formerly called the Elderhostel programs). Norm also enjoys growing Bonsai trees, as well as photography. Pat is a quilter and is active in several quilt groups. They will share photos and stories of their travels to these picturesque Washington islands.

“Simply Magic”
with Anthony the Magician
Friday, March 30th at 2:00 pm
Say the word “magician,” and several images come to mind: black silk hats, pulling a coin from behind someone’s ear, and card tricks, to name a few. But there is much more to magic than simply waving a wand and making rabbits disappear! Join local magician Anthony Gilmore on Friday, March 30th at 2:00 pm as he performs “Simply Magic” at Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living.
Gilmore’s show is sophisticated magic which includes elements such as audience participation, mind-reading, and a startling effect involving razor blades. “Rest assured,” said Gilmore in a 2010 interview, “the magic I perform is for nothing more than entertainment purposes. If you like to be entertained, come out and enjoy the show, it will be fun.”
Magic has been a lifelong obsession, starting when he was eight years old and a friend showed him how to perform a trick with nothing more than a coin and a handkerchief. “I was pretty much hooked,” says Gilmore.
For more than 30 years, Gilmore has been performing magic, in Portland, Spokane, upstate New York, and even in Germany where he met his wife. In fact, he opened for evening jazz performances at the Brasserie Montmartre in Portland for five years. Now he mostly performs for private events, and is also currently working on a project with senior living communities.
This program is free and open to the public. Cornell Estates is located at 1005 NE 17th Avenue, Hillsboro. For more information, please call Cornell Estates Retirement & Assisted Living at (503) 640-2884.
