Join us on Friday, July 2nd at 1:30pm as Gordon Neal Herman Pianist, Composer and Musicologist will be on hand to present the history of American marching bands. He will cover the American Marching Band’s rise to popular music status in the early 1900’s.  Such figures as John Phillip Sousa and Arthur Pryor will be covered along with musical examples.

Join us Monday, July 19th at 1:30pm as we learn how ancient civiliations used stone carving, we will explore the history of major stone monuments in the U.S., and find out what local civic and public carving projects are underway.

Vancouver Granite Works opened its doors for busines in 1921.  In the mid-1960s, M.L. Fuerstenberg began working for then-owner, George Mielke.  M.L. and his wife, Gert, later took over operations from Mielk.  In 1974, their son-current owner Bruce fuerstenberg-joined them in the business as well.  At the end of 1986, M.L. and Gert retired and Bruce and his wife, Vicki, took over the business.

On Friday, July 23rd at 1:30pm Richard W. Slatta, son of resident Amy slatta, is an author and professor of history at North Carolina State university in Raleigh, and will speak at Cornell Estates.  His illustrated lecture, titled “Fast Ride with America’s Cowboys,” examines the cowboy in history and popular culture from the 19th century through the present.

The audience will see the cowboy at work and play and explore the dangers and challenges that he faced.  The lecture features historical photographs as well as paintings by Charlie Russell, Frederic Remington, and others.

The Poetry Out Loud club will be performing a “Choral Reading” on Wednesday, July 28th at 1:30pm.  Choral reading is an interpretive reading of poetry by a group of voices.  Participants will read individual lines or stanzas alone, in pairs or in unison.  Choral rading is well-suited to rhymes, poetry, and lyrics.  Reading aloud effectively and fluently is a difficult skill taking time to practice to imporve.  the Choral troupe has taken a lot of time to practice and polish their performance of some ofyour favorite poems including “The Spider and The Fly,” “Casey At the Bat,” “How Do I Love Thee,” and many more.

Come hear all about touring in the land famous for vaious great cheese and yummy chocolates!  On Friday, July 30th at 1:30 pm Cornell has invited Morgan Brown recently back from her tour of northern Europe.  During the power point presentation, she will explore beautiful Brussels with its museums, parks and stores in the inner city–as well view the European Union Headquarters affectionately known as “Manhattan”.

The top ten myths about forensic science will be revealed in this presentation, as perpetuated by popular TV shows.  On Wednesday, June 9th at 10am a forensic expert will contrast each myth with the reality of forensics as seen through the eyes and work of Oregon State Police Forensic Scientists. 

Speaker Kori Barnum is a Forensic Scientist with the Oregon State Police, Portland Metro Forensic lab.  Her areas of expertise are forensic biology, firearms and  forensic anthropology.  She is also a Board Member of Northwest Association of Forensic Scientists and a member of the American Academy of   Forensic Scientists and the International Association for Identification.

The wine tasting is from 2pm-2:45pm.

Music starts from 2:45pm- 3:30pm.

 As we kick off our summer programs we would like to invite you to a special wine and cheese tasting party. Coming together with a group of fellow wine enthusiasts is a fantastic way to exercise your palate. A group atmosphere offers participants the opportunity to share opinions and conclusions, shaping and strengthening each individual’s appreciation of the wine. The concept  is similar to that of a book club. Sure, you can enjoy a novel on your own, but getting together with a group of people can enhance your appreciation of that novel and the same holds true for wine tasting.

Our performers during the wine tasting are Skip & Sandy Farmer, son-in-law and daughter of Cornell Estates resident, Charl Matthews.  They are known for producing “sweet musical harmonies” through folk, country, bluegrass, soft rock, and “old timey” sing-along-tunes.  They have had overtures to play music from as far away as Texas and California.  They’ve been asked to play at wineries, wine bars, weddings, restaurants, hospitals, and private parties.

Skip has written 40 songs and Sandy has sung with the “French Troubadour”, Eric John Kaiser, Jerry Hannan, a composer of music for the film industry, and many local performers.  At the present time they are working on two CD projects.  Skip is also the Manager of the Influence Music Hall in downtown Hillsboro and is in the beginning stages of opening a wine importing business. Both of these are non-profit groups dedicated to promoting all forms of art in the Hillsboro area.

 The pageantry and enchantment of the Portland Rose Festival will be coming to Cornell Estates on Wednesday, June 16th at 1:30pm.  Dressed in white suits, straw hats and gloves the Rosarians will preside over the coronation of our Senior Rose Court Queens.  The festivities will conclude with the traditional rose dedication ceremony featuring the history of the rose and special blessings by the Rosarian Chaplin.

This year we are honored to have Alex Seabold, son of Steve and Lena Seabold, who will emcee this auspicious event.  He is honored to be asked to take part in the selection of Cornell Estates’ queens.

Want to see some really big fish swimming in the largest aquarium in the world?  Atlanta tourist sites are the topic on Friday, June 18th at 1:30 p.m.   Hillsboro resident and photography enthusiast, Bob Kuest, will present highlights of a photographic odyssey.

This month’s travelogue will feature Kuests’ pictures and video shots during a recent visit to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.  It is the world’s largest aquarium with more than 8 million gallons of marine and fresh water wildlife and houses more than 100,000 animals of 500 different species.

He will also share pictures and experiences of their visit to other Atlanta attractions such as the Coca Cola Museum where it’s the only place where you can explore the complete story-past, present and future-of one of the world’s best-known brands. 

Then it is off to The CNN headquarters, and the   Robbins AFB Aviation Museum.  This museum is home of the Air Force Material Command’s  Air    Logistics Center which is the worldwide manager for a wide range of aircraft, engines, missiles, software, avionics and accessories components.

Rose City Flute Choir, a community performing ensemble and non-profit      organization, was formed in the fall of 1986.  Dedicated to weekly rehearsals and the performance of quality flute ensemble literature, membership of approximately 20 flutists draws from all walks of life.  The Rose City Flute Choir uses many flutes in the flute family including piccolos, concert flutes, alto flutes, bass flutes and a contrabass flute, giving the group a full six octave range.  The different flutes will be introduced during the course of the performance.
