“Hillsboro’s Treasures”

Hillsboro Historical Society, in cooperation with Cornell Estates, presents “Hillsboro’s Treasures,” a program to share local histories and identify Hillsboro treasures, both the historic architectural sites as well as the valuable resource of our citizens and their collective memories.

Bob Jackson will be part of the evening’s program to share his family legacy, including Jackson Bottom. The program will be held on Tuesday, May 22, at 6:30 pm in the Party Room at Cornell Estates, located at 1005 NE 17^th Avenue in Hillsboro.

Guests will hear stories of Hillsboro’s past told by local residents, followed by a chance to share their own memories of Hillsboro’s early days. Volunteers will be on hand to record the stories, and refreshments will be provided. The program is free and open to the public.

May is National Historic Preservation Month; in honor of national efforts to preserve our heritage we offer this community event. The “Hillsboro’s Treasures” program is a chance to add to our knowledge of local history while giving Hillsboro residents a chance to meet and remember. Through program like this the Hillsboro Historical Society (HHS) hopes to create a resource for future historians.

In addition, we plan to have fun! Bring your stories and your curiosity to “Hillsboro’s Treasures” on May 22.

The HHS was formed in 2000 by a group of local citizens with a mission to “protect and preserve Hillsboro’s cultural resources through education to historic property owners, appointed and elected officials, and the general public.”

Eastern Europe – Transition and Resilience

Everyone remembers when the Berlin wall was torn down in 1989. It signaled the end of the Cold War and its stranglehold over Germany and Eastern Europe.

But what does Eastern Europe look like today, more than twenty years after their liberation? Join Barbara Halstead on Wednesday, May 16^th at 1:30 pm at Cornell Estates Retirement & Assisted Living to find out!

With Barbara as our guide, we will travel to six countries that were greatly affected by World War II and then by Communist Rule: the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, and Slovenia. Our adventure will include special stops in Prague, Krakow, and Budapest.

Barbara will share her observations and discussions with expert guides that helped them learn about the history of these countries and progress that has been made since their liberation twenty years ago.

In particular, Barbara will describe the resilience of these countries and their people. It is remarkable that the people of these countries have endured tremendous hardships. Their resilience in overcoming years of suppression is evident in the rebuilding of their infrastructure. There is much evidence of growing influence of Western Culture while retaining a clear sense of their own national pride and identity.

Barbara, a retired Hillsboro elementary school teacher, first caught the travel bug during a one-year teaching program in England. Now a seasoned world traveler, she has traveled the globe exploring New Zealand, Tibet, Japan, and more.

On each trip, Barbara finds a way to meet the local people. Talking to locals, and hearing their history or culture in their own words motivates her to continue exploring new countries.

Looking for a unique way to celebrate Mother’s Day? If so, you’re invited to a very special concert with violinist Aaron Meyer on Friday, May 11^th at 1:30 pm at Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living!

A self-proclaimed concert rock violinist, Aaron’s style is an unusual mix of classical and world music, all combined with his own interpretation and passion. He will play some old favorites in celebration of Mother’s Day, as well as his own original compositions and works from around the world.

A classically trained violinist since age 5, Meyer debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 11, and has soloed with major international symphony orchestras and ballet companies, in addition to performing for many world leaders and Dignitaries. Meyer has worked with vastly contrasting artists such as Pink Martini, Smokey Robinson, Aaron Neville, The Temptations, Leftover Salmon, 2002 Miss America – Katie Harman, and the platinum record selling band Everclear.

On May 15, 2001 at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon 10,000 people watched as Aaron played on stage with the Dalai Lama, where he performed an original piece of music written for the Dalai Lama’s visit to Portland along with another well known Portland musician, pianist Michael Allen Harrison.

Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda

Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project

Jane Goodall amazed the world in the 1960s with her research into the lives of chimpanzees. But what about their larger cousins, the mountain gorillas?

Join Dr. Darlene deManicor on Thursday, May 10^th for a voyage into the heart of Africa to get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures. The presentation begins at 6:30 pm at Cornell Estates Retirement & Assisted Living in Hillsboro.

With Darlene as our guide, we will travel to the Virunga Volcanoes Massif, a combination of national parks in three countries: Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda.

The Massif is home to the vast majority of the world’s 780 mountain gorillas. Walk alongside Darlene as she describes her journey into Africa with a group of veterinarians to see first-hand the forces that threaten this species, and the efforts to save them.

We will meet the wonderful staff of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project, a group of veterinarians who provide hands-on medical care to the sick and injured mountain gorillas. They also monitor the gorillas and other populations for new infectious diseases in wildlife that could pose a threat to human health, and work with the people around the Massif to educate them about the mountain gorillas in an effort to prevent poaching.

A field biologist early in her career, Darlene also holds a degree in endocrinology. She spent many years in medical research, taking breaks to travel and work around the world, including Southeast Asia, Africa, and Europe. She then returned to university and received a degree in medical anthropology, focusing her dissertation on alternative and complementary cancer treatments. She is excited to share her experiences in Rwanda, and her years of international travel, with our residents and the general public.

Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living is proud to host this seminar focusing on the various body systems and what they do, and the vital role of herbs and herbal formulas in strengthening and supporting each of them for greater health. Cheryl Matschek, Ph.D, M.H.,M.S., C.C.I.I., will be the instructor for this one day seminar on Saturday, April 28^th from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Whether you are a lay person wanting to know more to help yourself and your family, a health practitioner, or a Good Herbs distributor, this seminar will help you further your knowledge about the body systems, what they do and how they work, and help you use herbs more successfully in supporting them.

Participants will learn major body systems and their functions, herbal support for each body system, essential oils and how they are used to support the body, flower essences and how they are used to support the body, how to use the Compass as an assessment tool for greater health, and Good Herbs Foundational Basics and how to obtain them.

The discovery of healing effects of herbs dates back to many hundreds, even thousands, of years. Many ancient civilizations understood the use of herbs for medicinal and health purposes. Powerful Tools for Caregivers

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational series designed to provide you with the tools you need to take care of yourself.

This program helps family caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate feelings better, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources.

Classes consist of six sessions held once a week. Two experienced Class Leaders conduct the series (many are experienced caregivers themselves, who have successfully applied the techniques they teach). Interactive lessons, discussions and brainstorming will help you take the “tools” you choose and put them into action for your life.

You will receive a book, The Caregiver Helpbook, developed specifically for the class. A donation of $25.00 to help defray the cost of the book is suggested, but not required to attend the class.

Classes will be held at Cornell Estates Retirement &Assisted Living at 6:30pm in the Party Room every Thursday beginning April 26th through May 31st.
