Book Signing & Reception

Cornell Estates Retirement is proud to host a book signing, “(fear not) Venture to inner peace” written by Alan Lohner, a lifelong writer and advertising creative director, who earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Oregon. For four years in the late 1970s, Alan served as a police officer in Toledo, Ohio, where he witnessed the tragedy of murders, suicides and traffic fatalities. He was the first person on the scene when his brother John was killed in a single-car accident.

That tragic event compelled Alan to set out on a quest for higher learning and to search for deeper meaning in life. Why are we here? What is our purpose? What are the most important things in life?

The truths that Alan has uncovered on his life journey have been woven into (fear not), which by now has made its way around the world, positively touching thousands of lives.  Alan joins us Friday, June 25th at 1:30pm to share moments from his life that have helped shape the powerful messages within (fear not).

 Harpist Jenny Lindner will perform during the reception.  Currently, Jenny plays Principal Harp with the Portland Opera and the Oregon Ballet Theatre, and works frequently with the Oregon Symphony. She has studied with Marion Fouse of Portland, Oregon, Eileen Malone at the Eastman School of Music, and Catherine Michel, Marie-Claire Jamet, and Pierre Jamet in Paris.  She runs a private studio and free-lances.  Jenny loves mysteries, movies, and tennis, but credits the harp as her best adventures.

Voter Assistant Program

Wednesday, May 5th

Washington County Elections Voter Assistance Program will be on hand with their Voter Assistance Team at Cornell Estates on Wednesday, May 5th, at 10:00am, in the Party Room to assist voters who: need help reading the Voters’ Pamphlet and/or their ballot; need someone to be their “pencil”  to assist them in completing the ballot; or want to vote privately and independently using an alternative format ballot.  Assistance provided will not  include making voting decisions for the voter.

Honoring Mothers

Carol Ann Wheeler, former Ladies National Fiddle Champion, will perform a FREE concert and reception for mothers throughout Washington County in celebration of Mother’s Day.  On Friday, May 7th, at 1:30pm in the Party Room, Carol Ann will play a variety of styles, including Irish, Scottish, Canadian, Texas, Gypsy & Classical violin and is proud to preserve America’s heritage of Old-Time Fiddle  Music.  In the audience will be Carol Ann’s mother, Irene Ledbetter, a resident of Cornell Estates.

Fiddle, or “mountain music”, represents perhaps the oldest form of North American traditional music other than native American music, and is termed  “old-time”.  Her contributions to old-time music can be found in her  numerous instructional books and recordings with the Mel Bay Company.  Jeff Heberle, who plays the guitar, adds the perfect accompaniment to the violin for their performance.

Historically, the fiddle was always the leading melodic instrument and, if no other instruments were available, dances were accompanied only by a single fiddler, who often also acted as a dance caller.

Bruttles & Bernard Candy

Monday, May 10th from 10am to 3pm,

 “Bruttles” and Bernard Candy will be at Cornell    Estates on Monday, May 10th, from 10am to 3pm, in the Main Living Room with everyone’s favorite mouth watering candies .

Bernard Callebaut Chocolate will be featuring handmade toffee and caramels covered with butter Belgian chocolate.  Also available are Gourmet Butterfingers in five flavors.

Based in Spokane Valley, “Bruttles Candies” makes soft peanut butter brittle (with and without chocolate coating) that’s used as  a turn down treat  in guest rooms at the  Davenport Hotel.   Bruttles has long been affiliated with the Davenport Hotel and sells its products from the Hotel Candy Shoppe.

The Hillsboro Symphony Orchestra

A Photographic Journey

Cornell Estates welcomes armature photographer, Terry Steel, as he shares his photographic journey from Santa Cruz Island to the Oregon Coast, Mt. Hood National forest to the very northeast corner of Oregon, the Wallowa Mountains and north to Whistler, BC.  His power point presentation will begin at 1:30pm in the Party Room on Friday, May 28th.

His presentation will begin on Santa Cruz Island, one of the five islands that make up the Channel Islands National Park, located just twenty five miles off the Southern California coastline. From there, the audience will journey north along the Oregon Coast making brief stops at a few of the Central and Northern beaches.

Next stop is Mt. Hood National Forest with its many lakes and hiking trails to the very northeast corner of Oregon, to see the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa Mountains. This area has been described as the Oregon Alps and has over fifty alpine lakes. The last stop on the journey is Whistler, BC; one of the venues for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Photographer Terry Steele, son in-law to Cornell Estate’s resident Rose Enyeart,  spent several years living in Ventura County , which lies along the Southern California coastline, before moving back home to Oregon.  In exchange for the beautiful sailing waters off Ventura,  he has rediscovered the wonderful back country of the Pacific Northwest.

Portland Rose Festival Princess Visit

         Monday, May 24th at 3pm, in the Party Room

The Rose Festival Court is comprised of 15  outstanding women who are selected from 15 Portland-area high schools by their respective student bodies.  The   mission of the Rose Festival Court program is to provide scholarships for higher education, to promote community outreach and volunteerism and to offer networking and mentoring opportunities to  outstanding young women in a program that perpetuates an appreciation for Rose Festival history and tradition.

On Monday, May 24th, at 3pm in the Party Room, the 2010 Rose Festival Princesses and seven chaperons will visit the residents  of Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living.  These lovely ladies will begin “Bridging Communities” by “engaging” our community in kicking off the 2010 Rose Festival season.

Century High School Art Showcase 

Wednesday, May 26th, at 1:30pm

On Wednesday, May 26th at, 1:30pm in the Party Room nine talented Advanced Placement students from Century High School’s art program will share and discuss their senior art projects as part of the  Artist  @ Cornell Program at Cornell Estates.

The students have the opportunity to receive college credits by submitting a portfolio with 24 works of art in either a drawing, 2D design or 3D portfolio. All students are required to have six pieces of art for FAME night to complete their senior project requirement for graduation. FAME (Focused Arts and Media Education) night is June 2nd at 6pm at Century High school.  Their art teacher Anne Johnson said, “This class has been outstanding.  They are constantly  challenging themselves and doing amazing work!”

The following are biographies from 3 students who will be participating:

Roxanne Olsson’s art work is inspired by world cultures and her travels to China.  She loves experiencing and researching other cultures and brings that to her artwork. Often times her pieces are combinations of animals, people, and traditional patterns that are part of a specific country or region. Next year she will be attending the University of Oregon for International Studies.

Katerina Edwards is inspired by the Fauvists (such as Matisse) and then likes to incorporate contour drawing. Her primary subjects are friends and family as well as incorporating backgrounds that are relevant to the person or personality. She will either go to Portland State University, to study psychology and art or to Pacific Northwest College of Art.

Cornell Estates and Mooberry Elementary Celebrate Year-long Community Alliance

In August 2009, Cornell Estates’ retirement resident Anne Matthes spotted an article in the Hillsboro Argus which described how some Hillsboro elementary schools were struggling last year.  One of the schools mentioned was nearby Mooberry Elementary.  Matthes approached Cornell Estates’ staff and asked “What can we do to help?”  This little question has spawned a year-long community alliance between Cornell Estates Retirement & Assisted Living and Mooberry Elementary.  Together, they have committed time, energy, and resources to five ongoing innovative intergenerational collaborative projects.

By the end of this school year, over 50 residents of Cornell Estates will have participated with over 150 students in these projects, including serving as bi-weekly Pen Pals with Miss Mito’s 3^rd Grade class, volunteering each Monday afternoon in the SMART Reading program, and working with students in the after-school Math & Science Club.  To support Mrs. Walls’ 6^th grade music classes for their international music performance coming up in May, Cornell residents have been making costumes and props, as well as recording international books on tape to cheer the children on in their preparations.  Mooberry principal Linda Bishop says, “The collaboration with Cornell Estates has been a “win-win” for our students and the senior residents.  Children here have enjoyed writing letters, reading, and learning about their special friends at Cornell.We feel very fortunate to have this partnership.”  This month on April 20^th, Cornell Estates residents join with 4^th graders at Mooberry Elementary in an intergenerational drumming circle, a fitting tribute to the motto of the year-long alliance that “we are better together”. 

Matthes, a retired school psychologist, participates in three of the partnership projects.  She says, “I have always enjoyed working with school children.  Projects like SMART Reading allow us to participate in providing extra practice for the children, and they seem to really enjoy the extra one-on-one attention we offer.”  Both Cornell Estates and Mooberry Elementary hope to expand their partnership in the 2010/2011 school year with additional projects to support the Mooberry children and the good work of the school staff and faculty.

This community alliance is one of many intergenerational partnerships that Cornell Estates has launched over the past year with local organizations as part of their “Engaging the Community” initiative.  Through these community partnerships, Cornell Estates residents have the opportunity to engage in meaningful projects with members of their surrounding community.  Research demonstrates that staying connected and contributing in the community is good for our health.  By engaging with community members of all ages, we are staying healthy together, says Landa Carlson of Cornell Estates.
