Acoustic Amour: A Valentine’s Day Concert

Featuring National Fiddle Champion Carol Ann Wheeler

With Jeff Heberle & Jim Toussaint

Monday, February 14th at 1:30 pm

What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin, anyway? As it turns out, not much, except how music is played on it! Free and open to the public, Cornell Estates is proud to present fiddle champion Carol Ann Wheeler, with musical accompaniment by Jeff Heberle and Jim Toussaint on Monday, February 14th at 1:30 p.m.  Enjoy listening to the vibrant and diverse styles of fiddle music at this unique performance.

The fiddle has a proud history strongly rooted in the folk traditions of North America, England, Scotland, Ireland and some African nations. Fiddle music is typically fast and energetic, as in the style of old-time music. One of the oldest forms of music, old time music has come to be called just that. Associated with the stories, history and customs of a people and passed on informally and formally through generations, old time music is brought to life by the fiddle.

Carol Ann Wheeler, Former Ladies National Fiddle Champion, plays a variety of fiddle styles, including Irish, Scottish, Canadian, Texas, and Gypsy, as well as classical violin. She is proud to preserve America’s heritage of old-time fiddle music and has written numerous instructional books on the topic. Additionally, she has recorded old time fiddle music with the Mel Bay Company. Guitarist Jeff Heberle adds the perfect accompaniment to the violin. Jim Toussaint plays the second violin/fiddle with Carol Ann and turns the dynamic duet into a trio with more styles, colorful harmonization, and songs. Enjoy the rich history and lively tunes of Carol Ann Wheeler & Jeff Heberle with Jim Toussaint.

This special performance is free and open to the public. Cornell Estates is located at 1005 N.E. 17th Avenue, Hillsboro.  Call (503) 640-2884 for more information.

Educational Travelogue: Ferry Hopping in Alaska

Friday, February 11th at 1:30 pm

Free and open to the public, the “Educational Travelogue” will be held on Friday, February 11th at 1:30 p.m.  Join Hillsboro residents Norm and Pat Sandberg as they share photographs and recount their adventures through the majestic panorama of the Inside Passage of Alaska on the State Ferry System.

The ferry rides provide travelers with a breathtaking backdrop of Alaskan mountains, glaciers, and crystal waters teeming with wildlife such as whales, seals, sea lions, orcas, and sea otters. The coastline during summer months boasts mountain goats, brown and black bears, puffins, kittiwakes and murres, a seabird native to arctic waters.

The state-run Alaska Marine Highway System is the world’s longest ferry route, deploying ferries which weave among islands and fjords throughout the year. Passengers are able to disembark in 33 ports, including Juneau, the state capital, Whittier, and Bellingham. Visitors will explore the culture of Alaskan villages for one day or a couple days, enjoying Native totem carvings, Russian architecture and Spanish and Scandinavian influences, while waiting for the next ferry to arrive.

Norm and Pat Sandberg are retired and live in Orenco. Traveling has become a favorite pastime in their “golden years.” Norm also enjoys growing Bonsai trees, as well as photography. Pat is a quilter and is active in several quilt groups. They will share photos and stories of their travels to these picturesque Alaskan destinations.

The Educational Travelogue is free and open to the public.  The series runs each month and covers the travels of residents, staff and community members.  Cornell Estates is located at 1005 N.E. 17th Avenue, Hillsboro.  Call (503) 640-2884 for more information.
