In an era of cell phone cameras, YouTube videos, and Facebook, pictures are everywhere in our world. But what separates a great picture, one that draws your eye again and again, from a mediocre one?  Photographer Jack Maloney has a few ideas about that!  Join him on Wednesday, August 24th at 1:30 pm at Cornell Estates for his “Subject, Light, and Composition” presentation.

A serious photographer since the 1980s, Jack knows a thing or two about taking great pictures!  The most important elements are choosing your subject and light, and experimenting with different angles and combinations to get a great picture.  His goal is to bring out the hidden places, mostly in grand landscapes or nature pictures.  Luckily for us, he is eager to share his knowledge and experience!

Adelante Mujeres

August 11, 2011

Adelante Mujeres – A Revolutionary Community Partner

If you’ve been at Cornell Estates on a Tuesday morning during the school year, you may have seen residents recording children’s books on tape in the Cascade Room or assembling book bag kits in the Columbia Room.  What you may not have realized, however, is that this project is in conjunction with one of our most active community partners: Adelante Mujeres.

Adelante Mujeres is a non-profit organization based in Forest Grove dedicated to “holistic education and empowerment of low-income Latina women and their families.”  At Cornell, we partner with Adelante in their English language program, recording bi-lingual children’s books on tape in English and meeting with adult English learners once a week during the school year.

But that’s just one piece of the Adelante Mujeres puzzle. This organization also manages the Forest Grove Farmer’s Market, runs a small business development program, a program to empower Latina girls, and so much more!  We are honored to work in partnership with them to empower Latina women and their families.

Here’s what you need to know about Adelante Mujeres, in their own words:

Light Through Dome

Hillsboro residents Jim and Landa Carlson have recently returned from a tour of Israel and will share their photos and insights in the travelogue: The People and Cultures of Israel, on Friday, August 12th at 1:30 pm, at Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living. The timing of their visit found the Middle East in a period of turmoil and transition. They had personal encounters with the people and the wondrous sites of Israel and its heritage which helped them gain new insights into Israel and its role in the sensitive region and changing world.

Their presentation will include Israel’s struggle for the land, with a special visit to the Golani Brigade training Base where they met with the soldiers who are actively involved in Israel’s defense as well as with the Druze Israeli Arab community, minorities in Israel’s society.

Encore Partner of the Month

Cornell Estates Retirement & Assisted Living August 2011 Encore Partner Sierra SmithSierra Smith recently graduated from Mooberry Elementary and will be starting at Poynter Middle School in the fall.  Sierra’s favorite subjects are art and reading and her hobbies include bike riding with friends, reading, drawing, and some cooking.  Another favorite hobby, Sierra has been playing keyboard since she was 7 years old.

Each Tuesday and Thursday morning at Cornell Estates, you can see Sierra helping with the Walking Club, Pretty Nails, Green Thumb Community Garden, or helping make the birdhouses for the aviary.  She also carried the Cornell Estates banner in the 4th of July Parade.  With her keyboard experience, Sierra offers piano lessons to Cornell Estates residents.  She has one student so far who she teaches on Friday afternoons.

What Sierra likes best about being at Cornell Estates is meeting new people, getting to know the people who live here and learning that they are happy here.  She has already recommended this experience to a friend, saying it is fun and a great way to spend a summer vacation.  Sierra says that the two best things that have happened to her so far are:  meeting Taylor Swift (and stepping on her toe!) and being in the Cornell Estates’ 4th of July Parade!

Thank you, Sierra, for making Cornell Estates part of your summer vacation.  We appreciate your time and your delightfully generous spirit.

Update on the Middle East

Friday, August 5th at 1:30 pm

Cornell Estates Retirement & Assisted Living August 2011 OASIS Lecture - Update on the Middle EastIraq. Lebanon. Egypt.  Whenever you tune into the news these days, something is always happening in the Middle East.  The big question is: why?  Join Dr. Jon Mandaville on Friday, August 5th at Cornell Estates as he explores the past and current turbulent history between the US and the Middle East.

In terms of US/Middle East relations, some things never go away.  Together with Dr. Mandaville, we will explore the causes behind this relationship.  The presentation will focus on our own culture and needs as well as patterns of development and change in the Middle East.  After comparing our cultural needs against those of the Middle East, we will ask ourselves the ultimate question: can these relations ever be friendly?

Dr. Jon Mandaville is Professor of History, Emeritus, at Portland State University and former director of the Middle East Studies Center.  Dr. Mandaville served as resident director of the American Institute for Yemeni Studies in Sana’a and currently is on its board of directors.  He earned his degrees in history and Middle East and Islamic Studies from Dartmouth, Princeton, and in Scotland.

Cornell Estates is proud to partner with OASIS Portland which offers challenging programs in the arts, humanities, wellness, and technology and volunteer services. Cornell Estates is located at 1005 NE 17th Ave. Hillsboro.  To attend the presentation, please call Oasis to reserve your space at (503) 241-3059 or visit www.oasisnet.org/portland to register.
