Wednesday, August 25th at 1:30 pm

Identity theft. Fraud. Political controversy. These stories frequently make newspaper headlines and TV spotlights. They can touch anyone, from national healthcare reform to using your credit card on the Internet. That’s why Cornell Estates is thrilled to invite you to meet State Senator Bruce Starr and Oregon House of Representatives candidate Shawn Lindsay on Wednesday, August 24th, at 1:30 pm. Sergeant Shawn Dunn from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office will be joining them with a presentation entitled “Fight Fraud and Identity Theft.”

Senator Bruce Starr, currently serving his 2nd term as a state senator, is a Hillsboro resident and native. Originally the owner of a construction company, Bruce currently advises companies on public affairs strategies. As a political advocate for his western Washington County district, his public service priorities include education reform, transportation investments, and economic development incentives.

Shawn Lindsay is a candidate for the Hillsboro and North Plains State Representative House District. Like Senator Starr, Shawn is deeply concerned about Oregon’s future and its impact on residents in Hillsboro and North Plains. Currently a business attorney, this father of 3 daughters cares immensely about our schools, economic strength, and ability to keep up with the growing burden of state government.

The Fraud and Identity Theft Enforcement Team (FITE) is the first successful interagency effort to combat the issues of fraud and identity theft Oregon. A cooperative effort between the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Hillsboro Police Department, Sergeant Shawn Dunn and his 5 team members aggressively track down fraud suspects and help victims recover from their losses every day.

This event is a unique opportunity for Hillsboro’s citizens to learn more about their state representatives and to protect themselves from fraud and identity theft. We look forward to welcoming you to Cornell Estates on Wednesday, August 25th at 1:30 pm for this special event!

This event is free and open to the public. Cornell Estates is located at 1005 NE 17th Avenue in Hillsboro. If you have questions or comments, or would like to plan an activity at Cornell Estates, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Friday, August 13th at 1:30pm

Tuscany, known for beautiful landscapes, a rich artistic legacy and its vast influence on high culture, will be Cornell Estates’ educational travelogue destination on Friday, August 13th at 1:30pm. Hillsboro residents Pat and Norm Sandberg will share their travels to this beautiful region of Italy. It is widely regarded as the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and home to some of the most influential people in the history of arts and science, such as Dante, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Galileo.

Their program highlights include Montalcino, a walled hilltop town in Tuscany where the climate and nature of the soil favors the numerous acres of vineyards from which some of Tuscany’s most esteemed red wines are produced. It is also home for the Palazzo Comunale, a brick and stone building with a very fine 13th century tower.

The Sandbergs traveled to one of the Tuscany’s most populous city, Florence. The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This grand city is regarded by many as the art capital of Italy and is the home of several museums including the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi, its most popular museum.

Another historic center that will be covered is Siena, famous for its cuisine, art, museums, and medieval cityscapes. It is home of the Piazza del Campo, now regarded as one of the most beautiful civic spaces in Europe. The Piazza del Campo is the site of the local market and the location for various sporting events including a horse race, the Palio.

Since their retirement, Hillsboro residents Norm and Pat Sandberg have traveled both in Europe and the United States. They have also been active in the Elderhostel programs. Photography has been a lifelong hobby of Norm’s and Pat is a Quilter sewing for charity and active in local groups and a Guild.

This event is free and open to the public. Cornell Estates is located at 1005 NE 17th Avenue in Hillsboro. If you have questions or comments, or would like to plan an activity at Cornell Estates, don’t hesitate to contact us.
