SOS for Super-carrier ex-USS Ranger

Friday, November 6th 1:30pm at Cornell Estates

On Friday, November 6th, Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living will host Naval Aviator, Tim Myers who will discuss how Washington County residents can assist in bringing the 56,300 ton super carrier USS Ranger to Portland. Myers is a strong supporter of the USS Ranger Museum, a privately funded project, with individual and corporate support.

When Ranger arrives, her new roll, will be to host one of the largest event/conference areas in the area and will attract tourists traveling to visit the largest floating museum in the world, and corporate groups looking to host their next conference in a unique location.

Local veteran organizations will have a permanent home and can make use of the ship for their meetings and events. A destination like this is a must for reunion associations of all sizes and interests. Local youth groups can have an “on-board” experience by staying overnight in the ship’s quarters; schools can utilize the ship’s educational components with classes held aboard.

The USS Ranger joined the Atlantic Fleet October 1957 just prior to sailing for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for shakedown. She commenced another period of sustained combat operations against North Vietnam and earned 13 battle stars for service in Vietnam. On July 12 1976, Ranger was assigned to operate off the coast of Kenya in response to a threat of military action by Ugandan forces. On December 19, 1992 Ranger was relieved and began her last long journey and was decommissioned on July 10, 1993.

The program is free and open to the public. Cornell Estates is located at 1005 N.E. 17th Avenue, Hillsboro. Call 503-640-2884 for more information.
